Bunch of us doing a gig at my old stomping grounds!

Hey guys,

So a friend of mine from high school has been wanting us to get together for a night of good times and play a gig. He never got to with us when I was younger. This isn't a promo or anything, just a bunch of middle-aged guys playing an hour set at a bar. And what a pub! It's the same damn place I opened for the Crash Test Dummies at back in 1992!
Lot of 90s stuff, some 80s. Mainly 80s is the slow power ballads. This joint has a dance floor, so I've argued for the traditional set list containing three sets of 3 fast, one slow each.
Of course, we'll need more in order to fill an hour, depending who among us is confident enough to take solos, and more than one apiece. I admit I can do bass solos ok, but my primary instrument has always been keys. But bass it is for this gig.
And we only have two rehearsals, so hopefully everyone's learned their part. Though I'm sensitive to the fact not everyone has had to learn to audition levels and stuff, and hell I'm a bit of a has-been at this point in life, trying to break back in.

List includes, but not limited to:
Little Sister - Queens Of The Stone Age
Hash Pipe - Weazer
Lonely Boy - Black Keys
Dani California - Chili Peppers
Fire - Hendrix
La Grange - ZZ
Times Like These - Foo
Helter Skelter - Paul McCartney version
I Want You To Want Me - Treap Chick
And the slow ones:
Heaven - Warrant
Home Sweet Home - Crue
Is This Love - Whitesnake
Every Rose Has Its Thorn - Poison
Wanted Dead Or Alive - Bonj

That's not the order, of course. But that's the lineup we've got so far.
Some of us don't know each other, they're people my friend knows from teaching English in South Korea.

Anyway, it's looking like good times! I'm sure we'll have plenty of booze, and sufficient leaf for those of us that swing that way ... that particular pub just begs to be played in! I just never thought I'd be playing there again, it was just a moment in time. But damn! Call us has-beens if the kids want to, but it's gonna be a good-ass fuckin' time!

We're hoping to pack the place using Facebook if one of us can get that events thingy figured out. There's supposed to be a way for us to show something like that to all friends of friends in the Portland area.

Here's to a great night of shake, rumble and roll! Notwithstanding any resultant children, for which we are not responsible *smile*

Ooh I left out some:
Black Hole Sun - Soundgarden
Lithium - Nirvana
What's So Funny About Peace Love and Understanding - Elvis Costello

I'll put the time up here if anyone wants to know, it's going to be at the Dublin Pub in Beaverton. No direct bus there but an Uber will get you there.
So if you've wondered about coming to the Portland area around August 3rd, well you got something more to do when you get here.

Smooth. Add a girl vocalist if possible, and that will cover your range issues.
Have fun.
Who knows, maybe, just maybe I'll be in Portland, and...
Laughing.
Smile.

One of our guys has recruited a group of dancing chicks, so hopefully we can have us a singing chick too. Glad he's found some, probably our age I'd guess.
All the music sites out here cater to millennials, when I ask for people it's always 20-something nonbinaries saying they can't consent to playing in a band with a bunch of old people, then apologize to me for being agist.
Anyway great suggest.

Hee that is a pretty funny typo or is there a Cheap Trick cover band?

Yeah. Laughing. Missed that.

Post 7 by LeoGuardian (You mean there is something outside of this room with my computer in it?) on Thursday, 22-Jun-2017 11:47:59

Lol that wasn't on purpose, but pretty good.

Damn! I wish bunch of you people could be out here then, we'd buy you booze, get you high, and pump you full of rockin' sound! How can I have lived without doing this shit for a couple decades? Lol responsibilities / raising a kid ... 's all good. Time to make up for lost time I guess.
Just a one-nighter this time, we'll see if George et al want to do it again. Or at least some of us when he's off to Korea, since his drummer's now staying in PDX.

Couple a chicks, couple a dicks. bring on the sticks strings and keys, yippee!

This sounds like a good time. I wish I could be out that way to enjoy it. As I live in Canada though, I don't see how that's likely.

Jet aircraft.
Doesn't everyone have one?
Laughing.

First rehearsal last night and it was great!
Hey, we bunch of middle-aged ugly rock dudes still have it ... some of us met for the first time ... and while we had to stay pretty focused we had some time to jam and feel stuff out.
With the Facebook Events things we're able to get the word out and looks like quite a few people we haven't seen in awhile want to come to the show.
I just found out, we're the headliner, the only act that night. 25 years ago you had to do a lot of Tuesday and Wednesday nights to get headline act on Thursday at that pub. We're gonna try and get all the band chicks together when we're there ... pc term would be all the wives and girlfriends and their friends.
One of our guys teaches Tango dancing, I think it is, and he's recruiting some tango girls to dance the stage with us. Plus, our lead guitar guy's got lasers. Shit man, I didn't know anyone had lasers for the shows anymore. Be awesome to have the lights bumping to the beat ... I've obviously never seen it but I've played with lasers a few times before when I was younger and tends to make for a pretty worked-up crowd.

Set list has changed, dropped the power ballads except Wanted Dead or Alive ... and brought in a few others. They want to do Another One Bites the Dust, that's a good footstomper.
Adding Under the God and Go with the Flow, the latter by Queens of the Stone Age.

Post 13 by Remy (I've now got the silver prolific poster award! wahoo!) on Thursday, 13-Jul-2017 13:58:28

I don't think the term in this case is PC so much as just respectful. But that's just me. Sounds like a great time in any case. Keep it "stomping".

Post 14 by forereel (Just posting.) on Thursday, 13-Jul-2017 22:11:28

Its a bar right? Respectful?
Laughing.

Post 15 by Pasco (my ISP would be out of business if it wasn't for this haven I live at) on Friday, 14-Jul-2017 4:32:40

Respect has nothing to do with where you are.

Post 16 by forereel (Just posting.) on Friday, 14-Jul-2017 7:27:47

Agreed, but in a bar, you have levels of what is thought to be respectful, or not. Bars are usually places were people are relaxed, so respect gets muddled in my humble experience.
Course, I don't judge folks, so maybe I have no respect meter?
Laughing. I don't go to a bar expecting PG, nor would I invite a person to go with me that is easily offended. I never feel I'm disrespected by anything that might happen in one by the customers.
Only the bartender or wait staff matter in behavior to me.
Laughing.

Post 17 by LeoGuardian (You mean there is something outside of this room with my computer in it?) on Friday, 14-Jul-2017 14:35:35

The only thing that could go wrong is if someone there doesn't have a good time.
That's what matters, you want everyone to have fun and a great time. Lol including the bar staff ... I remember we always liked it if the bar staff really enjoyed the show, not just made money from it.

Post 18 by forereel (Just posting.) on Friday, 14-Jul-2017 15:54:49

True enough. You get the staff dancing, you got it going on.
Smile.

Post 19 by LeoGuardian (You mean there is something outside of this room with my computer in it?) on Wednesday, 02-Aug-2017 12:48:38

It's tomorrow night! I gotta split from work to run over and sound check. Lol times sure have changed! We're the only act, and when I used to play that place 25 years ago, you were always 1 of 3 unless it was Monday or Tuesday nights.
And sound c hecking? Like showing up many hours early to do so? Never used to do that except for really important events like outdoor festivals or bigger indoor / ballroom / party situations. It's all cool, but not temperature wise. It's record temps out here, few houses have A/C ... but our venue does so hopefully that will mean the place gets packed out.
Between the two sets, the drummer, lead guitar guy and I are going to go back up onstage and take everyone on a side trip, just do some Floyd-ish spacy fuckery, a little acid influence though none of us take that anymore hehe.

Post 20 by forereel (Just posting.) on Wednesday, 02-Aug-2017 14:53:29

Alright dude.
I'll be there, so play good now.
Laughing.

Good luck!
Last week I was visiting a small town in AZ, and the saloon I was at had an open mike night. I stayed to watch. Most of it was as you'd expect, people not really ready for prime time, but a couple were good. Then, my companions talked me into playing. I had not intended to, but the bar seemed friendly, so what the hell. It had been over two years since I had performed anywhere, and 20 years since I played a public bar. I was unprepared, and had to borrow a guitar, but it really went well, and I was very well received. I was a little surprised as I am 20 years older than anyone else in the place. It was fun.

Pasco, that's awesome! Never too old to rock 'n' roll! Thanks for the well-wishes everyone. If someone posts a video I promise to put a link to it on this thread.

Last night was so awesome! Awesome to see those I remembered, a few, and
many friends of people and others who just came to the show. We had a great
time, shared the stage with an opening act - a local guy who does comedic and
offensive-to-some-people songs ... it was all good. The parking lot weed session
afterwards was a great way to end it. I think I got out of there 1:30 in the
morning.

It isn't my fault you didn't see me.
Glad you had fun.
Laughing.

So the video / audio isn't that great, but here's the user who has uploaded videos of us. All of them include ONO or One Night Only -- what we called ourselves for the show.
https://www.youtube.com/user/roeted
The recording's pretty amateur at times, and I swear my basss didn't distort that much live lol this was all recorded from cell phones and other digital cams but not through the PA.
It was a great time, just had to put that disclaimer for the audiophiles out there ...
